How to get the most out of astrological guidance
The focus of this column is on providing valuable insight into the dynamic of our relationship to cosmic events, from a psychological perspective.
Therefore, it is very important to correctly understand the impact of astrological influences and their expressions as personality traits, behavioral patterns, and specific events.
There is still a lot of confusion and misunderstanding of the role of Astrology and the true meaning of a birth chart.
The three most common misconceptions about how Astrology works include:
Common Misconception 1: ‘We’re both Gemini so we’re the same!’
Limiting the astrological identity to the Sun Sign alone greatly oversimplifies the complex structure of the birth chart by reducing billions of people to 12 personality types/life events, based on the Sign division of the Zodiac.
Moreover, the Sun Sign alone cannot reveal the variety of possible configurations in the horoscope, their expressions, and manifestations and the several ways in which they could affect the individual.
This is why the description of the astrological trends for a given month will be presented in this column by focusing on the Signs as dominant, emphasized energy in the natal horoscope, not just based on the Sun signs.
Example: A birth chart with Jupiter in the 9th House (ruled by Sagittarius) and a Rising sign/Ascendant Sagittarius, occupied by 2-3 personal planets would be considered Sagittarius dominant, even if the Sun is in a different sign. (see the Astro-Glossary for an explanation of those terms).
What is the meaning and significance of that? It means that this person will most likely display psychological traits and behavioral patterns typical for Sagittarius, as their dominant energy. Therefore. it is recommended to always consider that powerful influence in their birth chart too, even if their Sun Sign is different.
I invite you to examine your birth chart (you can generate it online, recommended website: www.astro.com, or ask an astrologer to do it for you). Then follow the descriptions and forecasts for the most prominent Sign/s energy in your horoscope (Moon Sign, Rising Sign, etc.), not just for the Zodiac Sign, where the Sun was at the time of your birth.
Common Misconception 2: ‘I need an astrologer to predict my future!’
Although I use the predictive dimension of Astrology in the birth chart analysis for interpreting the meaning and significance of important life periods, my consultations do not include concrete predictions.
In my opinion, astrologers should not interfere in any way in the clients´ decision-making process with regard to personal choices and future plans, nor should they make predictions about specific events.
The Psychological Astrologer´s role is not to predict the future but to explore how the chart reflects the psychic structure, the inner world of the individual, and what outcomes derive from the interaction between drives, beliefs, and feelings.
Central to this process is the individual and the way they process experience and make choices.
As an astrologer, I firmly believe that the real value of astrologers´ work lies in their ability to help clients understand the core issues by looking beyond the surface of their problems and motivate them to assume an active role in the resolution process.
Common Misconception 3: ‘My Chart is bad!’
As previously stated, central to Psychological Astrology is the individual and the way they process experience rather than presumed external influences, caused by the planets. The planets ´are not lurking in wait to spring some horror story on us´ (famous astrologer Donna Cunningham).
We are not doomed by the stars, nor are we prisoners of our birth charts.
It is of utmost importance to keep in mind that planets do not cause events! They reflect a connection and function as a law of correspondence between the outer, visible world and the inner world of the psyche.
“While the chart can depict the structure and dynamics of consciousness, it does not cause them. Just as the clock tells time without causing it.” – Glenn Perry, Ph.D., founder of the Academy of AstroPsychology.
Planets do not determine or influence human fate directly. Their positions at the time of birth however reflect psychological processes and attributes in accordance with nature and symbolize parts of consciousness, through their configurations and specific placements.
C.G Jung states, ‘An individual born in a particular season would display personality traits reflecting the quality of that particular season’.
We are free to make choices. Empowered with that understanding we must take responsibility for our actions and decisions, forge our own path in life, and ultimately design and create a reality we love.
Living by these principles, values, and beliefs would tremendously increase our ability to guide, inspire, mentor, teach and coach others and support them on their journey of healing, inner growth, and transformation.
