What makes us human is to have dreams and desires. Big dreams or small dreams make our lives better. Even more pleasurable. Yet most of these dreams do not become reality. Even when we have the intention to make them happen.
Do you have such dreams or desires that you wish to become real? Then keep on reading.
And remember… be careful what you dream for 😉
Back in the old days, some (famous) people practiced Alchemy, a branch of philosophy using natural elements. They wanted to craft a Philosopher’s Stone with a process they called the Magnum Opus (“Great Work”).
They desired to make it possible to purify common metals into gold. And brew an elixir that could heal all wounds and cure diseases. So that we could be immortal. A dream of many people.
The Magnum Opus was also a body of work and a framework they believed would result in the perfection of the human body and soul.
Although alchemy is hardly a mainstream practice these days, it still inspires people (like me) to search for ways to transform something common, like an idea, into pure golden reality.
With Desire Alchemy, we practice turning dreams and desires into actionable and realistic goals that fill your life with passion and energy.
The good news is that we do not need anything special to start doing Desire Alchemy. And we don’t require an artifact like the Philosopher’s Stone. Everything we need is already inside of us!
Get ready to make dream-chasing realistic and actionable, by using this step-by-step plan.
The difference between a dream and reality is action
Have you heard this one before? I bet you have. I also bet that you’ve had a bucket list of things that you would like to do someday for a long time. Yet, you don’t seem to mark many things as done.
You are not alone.
There is a good explanation why we keep on running with dreams or ideas we are passionate about, inside our heads. When something is vague or too big, it is difficult to make it happen.
I remember having a dream about building my own tech startup. I was working as a software engineer. I was still an employee.
I had no idea where to start. I just knew that one day I wanted to be my own boss. The more I talked about my idea, the bigger the desire became. Although, I still had no clue what running my own business would mean.
I kept on running with this dream in my head for almost four years. Thinking and strategizing. Until I bounced on an advertisement for a business start-up accelerator program. This was my trigger to finally take action.
However, I was too late with my business idea. There was already another team of people working on the exact same problem, with an almost similar solution. So, I decided to quit. It felt like a failure. I had wasted four years doing nothing. While I could have started making my dream a reality.
I learned a lesson. I decided that I would attempt to make more dreams a reality by having more action. I started doing small experiments that would show me whether the idea was worth continuing or not. Although, it took some time to learn how to do that.
The reason why I tell this story is that if you have a vague idea, then it’s more difficult to start with action. Especially when it’s overwhelming, like starting a business. Without action, it can stay an idea. Never to become reality. Even with small experiments, we can learn a lot.
Closing the gap between dreams and reality
With desire alchemy, we do not literally turn dreams into reality. We try to purify what the idea means so that we can create actionable goals from it. We close the gap between dream and reality in different steps.
Step 1: From dream or desire into tangible goals
The first step is to start writing down what is behind the dream or desire. You can use multiple techniques for it. Like journaling, meditation, or guided visualisation. Try to feel in your body what it means when you have fulfilled the desire or when the dream has become reality.
How will it affect or change your life? How will it impact the people surrounding you? What is the desired result?
Now you have an outcome that can be turned into one or more realistic goals. Maybe the goal cannot be reached yet, because you need to go on a journey first. That is fine.
The different goals can be visualised on a vision board or written in a journal. So that you can prioritise them.
Step 2: Brainstorm on ideas to make a goal happen
The next step is to ideate on how to reach those goals. You can have a brainstorming session with yourself or with other people to assist you. Select one goal at the time to work on.
Use your creativity. It can be fun to do a post-it party on the wall. Or draw mind maps or use other visualisation tools. By making ideas visible you can select and prioritise.
Step 3: Divide your ideas into smaller steps
Step 4: Create tasks from your steps
Step 5: Plan tasks into a calendar
This final step is also important. Without planning your tasks, they will not happen. Try to plan the tasks in your calendar in a way that you can do them without distraction. A planned task helps you to be accountable. To make it happen.
